When it comes to questions from clients over the years, probably the most prominent one would be regarding paint colours. Which ones to use and where, and in particular, which shades of white to choose from.
It can be particularly daunting when faced with numerous brands, and a wall of varying shades that all look (let’s be honest), startlingly similar when on a tiny swatch approximately 2cm x 5cm wide. This is why my number one recommendation is always sample pots in abundance.Paint in large quantities can be expensive and so to my mind, it has always made sense to purchase a number of sample pots first, just to make sure that the colour is going to turn out exactly as you have hoped for. It is equally important, that once you get those sample pots home that you paint them on various walls of your house, (side by side and 2 coats), so that you can go back at different times of the day as the light changes to check on which colours you prefer. Another less messy tip, is to instead paint onto a piece of board and move the board around at various times of day.
Here are 5 of my favourite whites and neutrals which I have personally tried and tested:
○ Dulux Lexicon– This is the “Ultimate White” according to Dulux paints. It is a favourite amongst designers and has a crisp grey undertone. I have also used Lexicon Quarter on numerous occasions.
○ Dulux Vivid White- a cool and bright white. A perfect choice for ceilings, skirting and wood trim.
○ Dulux Hogbristle quarter– an old favourite that has a wonderful depth and works well in various lighting conditions.
○ Dulux Natural White– a beautiful warm white and a true classic.
○ Dulux Beige Royal in half strength– This paint has a warm, neutral tone and is neither too blue or yellow.
I hope that these suggestions may help you with your next painting decision, and also make it potentially more cost effective by choosing correctly first time round.
